The Thomas Beale Cipher

Award Winning Animation Short Film
Based on a true legend of the famous unsolved code.
The film contains 16 hidden messages that hold clues to the characters' secrets. Eight are fairly easy requiring only a close eye. Six are moderately difficult using various encryption methods. Two are extremely difficult requiring a genius mind to decrypt.

Chapter 26: The Showdown

Chapter 26: The Showdown from WildBunchProductions on Vimeo.
We made this video for my (Matt) portfolio for the Narrative (Production) Track at CSULB. Its meant to be the ending of a long journey for our hero, Riko. Riko's brother was brutally murdered when he was a child so he has vowed revenge on Patrick, the leader of the gang who had Riko's brother slain. Set in a modern time we wanted to push the western-ness of the story by using the color effects and shots. However, we wanted to make sure that it was set in modern day by using bikes instead of horses and seeing suburban housing. Hope you like it!!

The Lord Is My Shotgun

BEST SHORT FILMS ON YOUTUBE. The Lord Is My Shotgun is an awesome, morally bankrupt action film about a hard-bitten detective at the end of his chain. Opening just after a robbery gone wrong four goons stand between this violent, vigilante, vengeful cop and the carpark exit - his imaginary salvation - but real damnation.

Hikikomori

"Hikikomori" is a social condition prevalent in Japan, where young people, unable to cope with social and academic pressures, shut themselves in their rooms for months, even years on end.
Yasuo Yamamoto hasn't emerged in almost a year. Yet even as his condition worsens, someone still cares for him...

Death in Venice

After the mob boss Sebastian Bianchi is brutally murdered, his old time protégé, Marc, gets involved with his grief-struck daughter, Julia. Marc has been faithful to his wife who is disabled and suffers from psychological problems after “an accident” ten years ago, but now guilty feelings consume him. Until the night when Julia asks him to help her avenge her father.
This movie bears little relation with Thomas Mann's famous novella of the same name - except for the title, and perhaps its ultimate subject matter: irresistible forces inside us that bring us to our demise.

"The Age Of Genius"

This is a condensed version of my thesis film. In the film print there are sections of text in both the beginning and end of the film, which unfortunately are not legible in this small resolution; essentially what the text says is that the film is inspired by the life and work of Bruno Schulz, and gives details about his murder by an SS officer in 1942. (If you have not read Bruno's writings, look for "The Street of Crocodiles",aka "The Cinnamon Shops", and "Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass". They are marvelous.)
The animation was shot under a 35mm Oxberry camera, drawn using charcoal and pastels on paper. I only used cells for the mattes in the lighting effects- everything else is paper with the negative space cut out (basically like cells, but not cells).

The film print is copyright The University of Southern California. The animation and artwork are copyright Joshua E. Harrell. The Music is copyright Lucas A. Marquardt.

We had to create a 1 minute animation movie in cut paper. We were required to exploit the characteristics of paper and were free with the graphic design, scenario...
We had to present an initial written presentation of the film in front of a jury of teachers. Half of the class's projects were accepted. Therefore the students whose projects weren't chosen had to work with the students whose projects were. Mine was chosen.
I chose to work with the archetypal characters of the "Film noir" genre, the mysterious man wearing a raincoat, and the "femme fatale" with high heels and an evening dress. I wanted to study the act of seduction between the two characters.
I would to work in black and white, with flat expanses of colour, with the expression of light and shade as the only means of interpreting the image.

We animated with cut paper, frame by frame, over 3 days.
I created all the images of the film, and my coworker all the sound effects. We worked with Victor Berard for the soundtrack.

Meme les pigeons vont au paradis

Meme les pigeons vont au paradis from samuel Tourneux on Vimeo.
Here is a short I directed in 2007. It's produced by Buf Companie, a french studio in Paris. I spent 18 month to make all the sets, characters, lighting, SFX, compo, etc... by myself. 3 months with the help of 6 animators I had to train on the private softwares of the company, at the same time they were animating the characters... Special thanks to them. And 3 months again for the finalisation.
I had the great pleasure to be Oscar nominated in 2008 with this film.
Special thanks also to my co-screenwriter, musicians, sounddesigners.
